Had an incredible night on Friday. Clear Hawaiian skies. Nice trades blew away the clouds and kept it cool. Set up at dusk and imaged almost until dawn. Put some time on the Helix and M45. I was about to pack up when this old friend started peeking up over the neighbor's roof. I just couldn't say no. Inspired by all the recent M42 shots that everyone has been getting posted...particularly Neil's recent contrib...I had to give her a go. The session went well, processing was a different matter. Spent better part of the weekend tweaking this and that, and getting tips and insight from Basti and the Hopp (thanks guys, you boys are always there when I need ya). After working through no less than nine different variations, decided to back up and ease off the gas pedal. So not like me, but I like the results.

18 x 10 sec (core)
18 x 300 sec (outside)
ST2000XCM
SV70mmED
Sirius Goto
Astronomick CCD LPR
Flatman
Handmade Bahtinov Mask

Now I have to go back and work on that M45 and Helix data.

Thanks Kevin, I'm with you, I like the "11" version better...I mean is "one louder". Honestly I am surprised at the amount of detail that showed with the 70mm. Much more than I have managed in the past.

Trev, awesome shot... I have to say that I like "11" better as well, just something about it. Little more contrast, and vibrant...

Oh No, it's all coming back to me now. It's about 25years ago and given the genre of the movie, I'm pretty sure I was not the designated driver lol. Where have all the good times gone. Marc

T, I like the original post better, but you know me, mellow-man. Steve, that was a riot (I still laugh at it) just can't put my finger on where it was from lol. Marc

I prefer the "not all the way to 11" version. Now to quote!!
Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

Thanks Brother Hopp. That red glow on the center region between M42 and NGC 1977 seems to be a reflection of the light coming from M42...I dunno if I am right, but it is pretty wicked cool either way. I also like that nearly vertical finger of dark cloud just passing in front of NGC 1977, just "under" the Running Man's lead leg. I am so geeking about it. Such a difference from my first M42 all those years ago...

Thanks Steve and Marc! I appreciate your comments. Canb I ask which of two you prefer? As I see them displayed here...I think I am leaning toward the "11"
