I have a ST 2000 XCM CCD.  Started this hobby with an Orion Star Shoot Deepo Space Imager II.  If I knew then what I know now, never would have waited the time or money.  Started this group to…Continue

Guiding

Started by Trevor Woodrow. Last reply by Trevor Woodrow Dec 27, 2010. 3 Replies

I have the ST2000XCM CCD that comes with the integrated guider. I find that using an external guider, like the Orion SS Autoguider works better. What are your experiences?

Charles, I would like to as well, but the price of the SBIG adapter is keeping me from it. I've found some lower proced adapters online, but the cheapest of those was still $120.

Bill, may have nothing to do w/nothing, but when I first went to use a usb repeater extension cable (20'), ccdops and ccdsoft would not recognize the sbig. I needed to go through an install w/the cable, don't know why cos I used the same cables w/my dslr and ssag, and it was plug in and go. After you mentioned the pwr hub, thought I'd mention my "problem" maybe something on the connections end(?) g-luck, let me know. Marc

Marc, one more thing. If you're going to try out Neb2, look at Nebulosity Sequence Generator. It's a third party add-on and a little buggy, but it is under active developement and it has nice features. I'm going to keep my eye on it.

Marc, I'm also having buyers remorse. I should have bought the M for the same price even if I couldn't afford filters and a wheel just yet (sigh). Anyone want to trade an ST-8300M or a C straight up?

I've played with CCDSoft and not used CCDOPs at all. I've been using Neb2 with a DSLR and I'm used to it so I'm trying to stick with it. I fisrt had trouble with the ST-8300C on a test run in my BY. I unplugged from my powered usb hub and went straight into the Toughbook. That helped that night, but then a couple days ago I had nothing but problems. I can't say it had anything to do with Neb2, but I know I need to strip the drivers and probably all of the SBIG supplied SW and reinstall from scratch.

Bill, only had my 8300m for a few weeks and been trying out different capture sftwre (mostly at kitchen table due to weather). I've had Neb-2.1.2 for years (for process use not capture). So I tried it out w/8300 for about 11/2hrs for capture (@ table). Ran great. I thought I was going to have to use ascom ,but Neb found the camera right off. I've only used CCDops in the field and tried CCDsoft (@table, but my beater capture laptop is not to fond of it little wonky). Does your cam run ok in ccdops? Been using Neb for awhile? Curious how you make out because I was planning to use Neb for capture. Marc

Does anyone use an ST-8300 C or M? I have the C version and I had had some issues with the drivers. I use Nebulosity 2 for image capture and the last two times out the drivers just quit over and over again. I had to remove power to the camera and reinstall the drivers about a dozen times. I finally removed and reinstalled all the drivers and it was stable after that. Any similar experiences?

Yeah they have one for Nikon as well. Same price I believe. OPT has them but made by SBIG.

I have a couple of Nikon/Nikkormatt lenses myself. Let me know how it goes, maybe I'll pick one of those up. $150 you say? That is not bad. OPT, or direct from the MFR? Do they have for the Nikon?

Yeah the larger field of view is the reason I'm interested. My girlfriend has a wide array of Canon lenses thus I have tons of options. It's $150 for the adapter kit so it's almost like $150 for four or five new lense capabilities for me. I'm going to try it out when I get my setup on the pier.
