Apollo XVII was the last mission to the moon and returned to Earth on December 19, 1972 with Commander Eugene Cernan, Commander Module Pilot Ronald Evans and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt. Apollo 17 broke several records, the longest manned lunar landing flight, longest on the surface, largest lunar samples and longest time in lunar orbit. To date Apollo 17 remains the most recent manned moon landing and the most recent manned flight beyond low Earth orbit. I painted this painting with great pride and sometimes tears would dwell up, not only because it was an end of an era but because of looking back at what an achievment everyone at NASA, all the subcontractor and the Nation had accompished, thank you.
