The Zone system is an excellent book, but you might start with Wodaski's earlier book or the ebooks of Lodrigues.
:-) with a DSLR it is not that difficult to get nice colourful pics
however with een dedicated astro camera it is more difficult, but the result is probably more rewarding
if you take b&w pictures, you can take coloured pics, same technique, same procedure;
however you need good software and skills to merge the results into a nice colour image
