You can do the star mask two ways, Dave. You can either use the star mask tool itself or you can use an Atrous wavelet transform and remove the residual layer and then apply a histogram transform to that to remove any nebulous areas. This kind if mask will just extract the star cores, not their halos and will stop the HDR transform wiping out the HDR data contained therein. I've had success with both methods.

Cool image Dave. There are so many takes on these objects. Using a scope with a higher focal length on an object traditionally images with a shorter FL gives a fresh look. Excellent work.

Did you use PI's HDR Transform or Curves transformation on this?
I just see a little but of degradation in some of the star cores. A star
mask would sort that right out.
