The Swan Nebula (which is also called the Omega Nebula, the Horseshoe Nebula, or the Lobster Nebula) is a region of star formation located some 420 million light years away toward the constellation Draco. The nebula shines by excited emission caused by the high-energy radiation of young stars. Unlike in many other emission nebulae, however, these stars are not obvious in optical images, but rather are hidden by dust, deep inside the nebula. Star formation is either still ongoing in this nebula, or else has ceased very recently.
