There is nothing more overwhelming or "wholey crap moment" to a flight crew on a Shuttle Mission than coming out of orbit traviling at 17,200 mph. Amazingly the Shuttle's computer takes control off all commands and does a swift bunch of 40'- manouvers with some other 40+ manouvers thus slowing the shuttle so it can then be landed by the commander. This is the simple explanation. Coming out of orbit is 100% handled by the on-board computers but landing is hand-held. Amazing stuff, Here is an example of were cameras can not be.
