Thanx Russ, no I was not really complaining, more trying to be funny, I also did not always give credit to excellent shots I have seen here, nodded approvingly but too lazy to leave a comment. The noise I believe crept in because the Orion SSDSI.V2 is TEC cooled but not in a controllable manner. I did not give myself time to shoot darks and used frames from a library hoping that Auto scale might cope for the temp difference. Sometimes the results were quite good, sometimes not! The HDR combine is a lot of trial and error. My version of PS (CS5.1) requires me to estimate integration times that might fit and I tried several settings.
As for the noise: It can't be said often enought; don't try to shoot too much in one night at the expense of neglecting calibration frames, especially if your camera is not temp. controlled. I should listen better to my own advice. But thanks for your feedback, very much appreciated! And no I think everyone is best qualified to decide what and how many photos he or she should place on the pin up wall!
Best Regards
Hans

My apologies to you Hans for our negligence. It's is a great shot and deserves recognition. The 4 or 5 of us that seem to be here all the time are currently consumed by the trials that life tosses at us. I know I am. Besides, I've somewhat got a bad taste in my mouth with the whole fan fair thing when another member openly attacked me because he thought I wasn't posting enough images - according to him. For some reason he has the idea that this is some sort of competition and everyone needs to run the race. Of course this has nothing to do with you and your images and again I apologize. To answer your direct question - no M42 is not old - actually is quite challenging because of the extreme high dynamic rang of this nebula. You've handled that quite well keeping the core subdued while bringing out the faint outer nebulosity. Color seems to be well balanced. It is a little noisy and I can see the seam from the stack or mosaic but I'm not sure I could do much better. The HDR combine method my have added some of that noise. Did you try to equalize or balance the luminosity of the frames before running that process?
Best regards
Russ

This photo has been here for a while, and frankly guys, I am a bit disappointed that not one of you fellow fanatics and Co-enthusiasts of the maddening astro-imaging crowd stopped here to leave a brief WOW exclamation mark. I believe it is the best photo I ever made, focus rperfect, centering pretty accurate, image processing quite accomplished, I can't claim credit for the perfect seeing but you gave me credit for some of my much less accomplished snapshots! Or is old M42 simply too boring?
