Noisy Nell, need to add more time plus I didn't have the right dark frames to calibrate with. It was taken @13'F and the closest dk.frms were @30'F. So I used a multiplication factor in DSS of .50 and it seemed pretty close. Oh yah, the tracking has been horrendous, plenty of star repair here. Already have the rgb shot so I'll process the whole mess, we'll see. Marc

Hey Mark, the tracking is doing that 1-2 pixel(est.) drift per 6-9mn exposure. I checked the raws from the last time I used it (July) and it did the same. When you say align or wt I think it's both. The weight/bal. isn't right so I'm not getting a good PA. When I have it in the cross hairs for the final PA adjustment you can see it moving around a bit. So it's centered for 30sec then it drifts (so where exactly is center). Going to try an extension on the cb shaft(6").
Man I was out the other nt 13'F and I'm asking myself, is this suppose to be fun. Must be hanging around 0 up there. Dude, thanks for the shout. Marc

Nice. Love the detail.

When I read "Noisy Nell" I assumed noise was what you wanted to get rid of, I have no experience with multiple shots and Dark Frames or any of the stacking software. All my shots are taken with a digital camera with limits so I use as many tools in PS as I can, not using any brushes to stay true. Because of what I do for a living I use PhotoShop 8-12 hours a day and have been for more than 14 years, and with my shots I use the same techniques that I apply to my paintings, some are not the same combinations but some work well also, so to make a short story long, I payed more attention to Noise than anything and thought I would share some info. I guess I did not really understand all you had written. All the best, Phil

Phillip, nothing to be sorry about I just didn't know what the aim of the procedure was. Hey I'm game for listening to and trying any new techniques. I/we can all use the help. Marc

Sorry Man,
I have maybe jumped to conclusions based on your notes above, having never used a DSLR taking multiple exposures and having to stack them, I just assumed you were trying to make your shot more clear. Sorry if I misunderstood.

Hop, I've been having a heck of a time getting this C8 to guide. I know my PA's are off, they are only good for about 3mins then it starts to drift. Do you put the 66 on top of the C8? I think mine is top heavy and that is where the problem is (?) Marc

Phillip, the steps you described make sense, I'm just not sure what we're trying to do. Marc

I did a little test and you are better off using screen mode for the other layers

Shoot, I just realized I forgot to tell you something, you will need to erase the crab out of the top layer, best to do it by hand as close up as you can, and then you may have to adjust the opacity of the layer so there is no hole showing. As complicated as this sounds the whole method only takes 3 minutes

Funny reading your description and I know you are not complaining but what I would do to get a shot like this, new camera coming soon I hope. Have you tried adjusting the Gamma Correction in PS just using a jpeg if the current image. You could also try doubling the image as a layer put the top layer in Overlay mode and pull the opacity back to 50% then adjust the bottom layer with Gamma Correction. You may get what you are after quicker. If all the tiny background stars are really important for your shot, create a third layer to sit over top and adjust it with contrast but do not worry about the crab (it will blow out) once the contrast is up now turn down the brightness to get it close to black pull the opacity to 50% or lower and put the layer in screen mode or Overlay, which ever looks better. I hope this makes sense.
