Thanks, Steve. I like the Tamron a lot in terms of optical performance. It at least matches, if not exceeding, the image quality of the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8, which costs 3 times as much. However, the Tamron doesn't have image stabilization and is somewhat slow at auto-focusing. Neither of these matter for astro-photography, but I actually bought it for photographing jazz performances and sometimes wish I could afford the Nikkor for that.
