HELP! I finally managed to auto-guide for the first time but I am not sure how successful considering the shape of the stars. Does anyone know what would cause this artifact on Capella. I used a 6.3 FR and a Canon T1i @ prime focus. Exp, was 40 sec. My surrounding were dark with no secondary light sources.

Now all I need to do is to get the guiding sorted. I am using Backyard EOS for imaging which works great and I am using PHD for Guiding but when I have them both operating the computer crashes. Odd considering the Laptop has 8gb of ram. Both pieces of software work great by themselves but together no go. I am now wondering if it may be the video card. All my cables are the latest and greatest so I know it is not that. Some more testing needed:)
Well I finally got around to figuring this mystery out. The 6.3 Reducer works just fine as long as I have it the Crawford focuser. I bought the Focuser and the Reducer from OPT at the same time and I think the sales guy put together what I would need to make it all work. Attached is an image of Capella with the SCT8, Crawford Focuser, 6.3 Reducer and the T1i, 40 sec exposure single image.
Thanks Marc. I will give that a try too. Thanks for the links also.
The focus w/the crawford in place looks dead on perfect. Maybe (w/out craw. focuser) try taking 3 pics-on focus, little under foc, little over foc. See what that shows? Marc
Philip, here's a couple threads that might be useful

Thanks Russ. I am using my Celestron SCT 8. The odd thing is that the reflections do not show up when I use the Crawford but I do not get the nice wide field with the Crawford. I read some review on the Celestron OTA's using the Antares f6.3 F/R and they were almost all 5 start out of 25 reviews. The biggest complaint was that it only came with 1 cap. I really want to get as wide a view as I can so I will keep at it and back track as much as I can which will mean re-balance and so on. Thanks Russ and I will keep you posted. BTW when you are shooting with a DSLR, what light setting do you use?
OK.
Yes I can see that reflection ring. It could be the strong light reflecting off of the secondary (assuming you're using the SCT) and I see those odd reflection lines running through the star as well. I think you're closer to narrowing it down to the cause.
I am going to try a few other things tonight and see what happens
Well the crazy reflects seem to be gone. The one without the focuser has an odd ring but that could be anything.
