More than 10%, I would say. It depends on how many 'features' (read stars) are in the overlapping areas. That's what the algorithm uses for alignment, so, the more the merrier! For sparse fields, 20-30% is probably sufficient, just make sure there are plenty of well-defined stars in the region of interest.

PixInsight does a pretty good job of mosaics, in my opinion. You just need to get a reasonable amount of overlap; enough to allow star alignment in the overlapping areas.

Fantastic work!! Just getting started on a couple of mosaics. What do you use to combine them?
